* My main focus as a performer and educator is piano and keyboards, although I am comfortable teaching improvisation to people who play any instrument. Lesson topics can be from any style of music. My approach has a strong emphasis on technique and music theory. The music theory aspect of lessons is rooted in jazz improvisation, which is then applied to all styles of music. I strive to find the best way for the student to enjoy their artistic adventure and still have it be educationally sound. I will show the student everything I know that will aid in their musical growth. My goal is to get the student not to need me anymore. Lessons with me is ideal for any age or level who wants to have fun with music or interested in developing their creative voice or thinking of a career in music.
My lesson rate is $20.00 a half hour and $40.00 for an hour. I schedule lessons Tuesday through Thursday 2:00 to 9:00 PM, Friday 2:00 to 7:00 PM and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. There are various times open each day. Email me with any other questions that you might have.
My teaching studio is in my home at 3121 Hoagland Ave. Fort Wayne IN 46807.

"Everything I know about jazz and everything my kids know about jazz has come from Dave. He is my jazz guru." Donna Sevcovic (Down Beat Winner and Music Educator)
"Dave Latchaw helped me utilize the necessary skills to play jazz in any type of setting and on top of that, was an extremely hip guy to talk to." Dave Holloway (Down Beat Winner and FreeTime Trio member)
"Dave Latchaw is by far one of the most creative and fun teachers to study with. While providing students with a broad knowledge of jazz improvisation, he assists them in creating their own individual voices. The concepts he teaches will hold true anywhere one chooses to go." Reggie Berg (Student at Eastman School of Music)
For those who cannot study with me I recommend Rocket Piano. Here is my review of Rocket Piano.
It does not matter what instrument you play everyone should learn piano or keyboard. I spend much of my teaching time teaching piano and keyboard lessons to people who are taking it as a second instrument. I have been planning at some point to make my own keyboard educational material on-line, until I checked out Rocket Piano. Rocket Piano does everything I would want a music education program to do. Rocket Piano comes with hundreds of sound files, pictures, diagrams, videos in step-by-step instructions training you to play by ear, read music, recognize chord shapes and more. With Rocket Piano you get 3 high quality books taking you from beginner to advanced levels in a step-by-step method. I still think one should still get private lessons but with Rocket Piano you could make real progress before you would need private instruction. Worth the time to have a look.

Music Clinics
I have vast experience working with several great ensembles in Northeast Indiana and the Midwest. I have worked with all ages from middle school through college. I will concentrate on developing strong, interactive rhythm sections, and/or harmonically correct soloing in improvisational situations. With positive reinforcement, the groundwork for improvement is laid out for the ensemble. Email me for rates, scheduling information, and any other questions that you might have.
Music Lectures
I can provide a wide variety of musical topics for informative and entertaining discussion. From a full lecture hall to smaller, more personal groups. Topics range from what it's like to be a professional musician and careers in music, to details on contemporary music theory, ensemble playing and improvisation. Email me for rates, scheduling information, and any other questions that you might have.
