1. How did Latch Music start?

From the mid to late 1980's, I was part of the hair band rock scene in Britain, playing keyboards with the Scottish rock band "The Heat". (You can see a few photos of us here.) Toward the end of my time with the band, I had a chance to hang out with Sharon Osbourne, wife and manager of Ozzy Osbourne. Her knowledge of the music business was impressive. Talking with her made me see that to be really successful in the main stream music bizz, you had to have management that had their act together as well as Sharon did. If you didn't, you were destined to stay forever in the grey wasteland of acts that were cool, but were never to become the next big thing. Sharon also made me realize that it really is more interesting to develop one's own musical voice and have control of your career, rather than try to just fit into the scene and play like everyone else. Unfortunately, not long after this experience, our manager, Roland Hyams, let my work permit expire and I had to leave the U.K.

Back home again in Indiana, motivated by my rock band experience, I worked on developing further what I feel is my own unique, expressive style of music and playing, through hours of studying and teaching. After a few years of self-imposed musical exile back in the States, I had the good fortune to go perform at the Plock, Poland open air jazz festival. While there, I also performed with Polish musicians Kryzsztof Kralka and Kryzsztof Misiak, along with the vocal group Anima, from Belarus. Inspired by this experience, I felt I was ready to start my own company, Latch Music. Latch Music's first release was the cd "Reflections". During the promotion for "Reflections", I was in touch with my first manager, Luke O'Reilly (manager for Al Stewart, The Fixx, and The Heat). Luke got me involved with a music web project that he was working on at the time, and really educated me about the possibilities of the Internet, which eventually led to the development of the web side of Latch Music.

2. What service does Latch Music provide?

We provide a site that will cut down the Internet "surf time" for music consumers, students, educators and artists looking for music similar to the music in the Latch Music catalog. We also have an archive of our music ezine, "The Zine". Each issue contains a music related article, and recommendation of a cool web site, web video, recording for study, and a guest artist interview. We keep every issue in "The Zine Archives". Latch Music also has a very highly-rated, quality free streaming radio station  at Live365.

3. What is "The Zine"?

"The Zine" is Latch Music's former online e-magazine. For each issue I wrote a music related article, did an interview with a guest artist who I think people should know about. Through hours of surfing I also picked a web site and web video that I feel will be interesting for our targeted clientele - music consumers, students, educators and artists.

4. What kind of music do you play on gigs?

As a freelance musician, one must learn to play as many styles of music as possible to be marketable. I am available for hire to play in a variety of different situations and with many different kinds of bands. On most gigs that I book and/or play on, the music will be mainly jazz standards. Check out my song list and booking info for more details.

5. What kind of music lessons do you make available?

I teach all styles of piano and keyboard music, and jazz improvisation for all instruments. Go to our Lessons page for more detailed info and some sample lesson topics.

6. How much do you charge for lessons?

My rates vary depending on the length of the lesson, clinic or lecture, and whether or not travel is involved. The price is comparable to what is charged by any of the local orchestra members or university music faculty. You can email me for an exact price for the type of lesson, clinic or lecture you are interested in.
